How to make a Homopolar motor

Today my class made a homopolar motor the goal was to make the wire spin. Here’s what you need:

  • A A battery ( any type).
  • 10 to 15 cm of copper wire.
  • neodymium magnet ( 3 to 4).

    Now here’s how to make it:

  • First you shape the copper wire with a hook at the top and a curl at the bottom.
  • Then connect the magnet to the bottom of the battery.
  • Next place the the copper wire on top of the battery. Make sure the tip of the hook is touching the top of the battery and the curl at the bottom is around the magnets.
  • If it is all connected correctly, the copper wire should spin!

If it doesn’t work try again by changing the shape, making sure the ends are in the correct place and the battery is full.  Hope you succeed and try it your self.

The Science!
When the electrons travel through the wire near the magnet’s field, they experience a special push or shove called the Lorentz force. This force acts like a tiny sideways nudge, trying to push the electrons in a specific direction. In a homopolar motor, the wire is usually shaped like a loop. Because the Lorentz force acts on the electrons throughout the loop, it creates a force that tries to rotate the entire loop around the center of the magnet. This is like lots of tiny pushes together to spin the wire.

Building a ballista

On wednesday we made a ballista. Ballista are ancient rome weapons that were used in fights. They are giant bows and arrows that when you pull it back it is called “potential energy” and when you let go it is called “kinetic energy.”  What you need:  10 popsicle sticks, 2 rubber bands, some string and hot glow.

How to the ballista: 

  • First make a frame and glow the popsicle sticks.
  • Then with the 2 rubber bands cut them in half and stick the rubber bands down. the middle of the popsicle stick frame and then tie a knot.
  • Next get 2 more popsicle sticks and wined it up until it makes a clicking noise. 
  • After that stick the string on the popsicle sticks that are on the side with tape. 
  • Lastly stick a popsicle stick in the middle of the popsicle stick frame and stick 2 more popsicle sticks on the side, then make a safe arrow to go with the ballista

Today we learnt haw to make a paper-cap phone.

At first we got 2 cap, and then we poked 2 holes in the bottom of the cap’s. We used had a long piece of string, we stuck the string in the hole in the cap’s.

What happened was the vibrations from our voice’s were traveling threw the string.

What I would change is the materials, I  used with the cap’s and string, I would use a larger rope and tin cap’s.
